Captain Kirk Hangs On For Dear Life In 5 New Images Of ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’

With all the buzz around "Star Wars: Episode 7" it kinda just seems like "Star Trek Into Darkness" is sort of this thing in the way that both J.J. Abrams and audiences just have to get over before we return to a galaxy far, fary away. But that said, "Star Trek" was a blast, and we're hoping that same popcorn fun will be found in the sequel, though in this batch of new photos, everyone is pretty damn serious.

Oh hey, there's Captain Kirk hanging onto the edge of something — again. Benedict Cumberbatch is all blue steel, while everyone else very, very concerned. But as always, looks can be deceiving. "The exciting thing is there's a possibility for change at any moment," Chris Pine told EW. "Because of [the producers'] background in TV, there's a possibility of changing story, dialogue, character points, action beats — these are all up for review at all times. Nothing is sacrosanct, no one is safe. You have to walk in and be really nimble."

But that didn't mean the cast were shut out of the writer's room or kept in the darkness (haw-haw) about where the story might go. "I would say all of the actors, uh, have more opinions this time,'' Abrams said. "The first time they were all kind of trusting of me and of the process. They hadn't proven to themselves that they could play these characters. Now they've been these characters, and they’ve been told — by me and by many others — that they are loved as these characters. So they came to the table with attitudes and opinions that in most cases were entirely valid and hugely important. And all of them are crazy-smart."

So we'll see how this all turns out. And while "Star Wars" is still the giant lens-flared elephant in the room, Pine hopes Abrams isn't done with the Enterprise. “I’ll be disappointed , but there are people in his circle that will carry on,”  the actor said. “Kidnapping is always an option, right?”

"Star Trek Into Darkness" opens on IMAX on May 15th and everywhere else on May 17th.nullnull
