It’s pretty sad to think about the fact that there have been no female-led films based on a Marvel Comics property since 2005’s “Elektra,” which didn’t exactly set a high standard for female-fronted superhero movies. In the twenty movies produced by Marvel Studios that fall under the Marvel Cinematic Universe banner, zero have been led by a woman, and it took until this year, with Peyton Reed’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” for a female character to get her name in the title of the film (though Evangeline Lily received second billing to Paul Rudd).

Female-led superhero movies were generally considered box office poison until the massive success of Wonder Woman in 2015, and now, Marvel has followed suit and finally produced its first female-led superhero film. “Captain Marvel,” directed by Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck (“Half Nelson,” Mississippi Grind“), looks to make up for those ten years of male-dominated blockbusters and forge a new path for female-led superhero films. Here’s the official synopsis:
Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Starring Brie Larson as the titular superhero, described by Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige as “the strongest character in the MCU,” the film takes place over twenty years ago in 1995, with the superpowered Carol Danvers returning to Earth on a mission to hunt the shape-shifting Skrulls, who are at war with the Kree. A number of characters from other Marvel films making retuning appearances: Djimon Hounsou’s Korath and Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser both made their debuts in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and both Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson are digitally de-aged. Joining the MCU veterans are Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, and Jude Law as [spoiler warning] Yon-Rogg.

Though the film’s story is largely self-contained within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to its time period, it will no doubt set up “Avengers 4” in a major way, since the character was heavily teased at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War” and is confirmed to be appearing in its sequel.
“Captain Marvel” soars into theaters on March 8, 2019. You can watch the new trailer below.
