Step aside, Star-Lord and Iron Man; “Captain Marvel” is here, bringing a lot of firsts to Marvel Studios. Not only giving us the first female director, composer, and lead in the studio, apparently we also get the strongest character in their cinematic universe, according to the Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige. We’ve been rooting for a female-lead superhero from Marvel since the introduction of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow back in 2010, to the point where DC Comics beat them to it with the female-centric “Wonder Woman,” so we really hope “Captain Marvel” will be worth the wait.

The plot will follow the character Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien’s during an accident, turning her into the superhero Captain Marvel. Starring Brie Larson (“Room,” “Kong: Skull Island”) as the titular character and Jude Law (“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Sherlock Holmes”) rumored as the hero Mar-Vell, the movie is set to take place in the ’90s, before Iron Man, the Hulk, and while Captain America is still on the ice. This would explain the return of a few of Marvel’s established actors, whose specific characters we last saw meeting somewhat ambiguous ends (spoilers!).

Based on the rest of the cast and their previous roles, it’s a fair assumption “Captain Marvel” will be in both “The Avengers” and “The Guardians of the Galaxy” storyline, giving the studio room for even more crossovers between their ever-growing list of characters. We saw a very small teaser in one of Marvel’s infamous post-credit scenes after “Avengers: Infinity War” and hopefully we’ll see more of her in the as-yet-unnamed ‘Avengers 4.’

Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Dijmon Hounsou and Lee Pace will be returning, along with newcomers Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan, and Annette Bening, with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck co-directing. “Captain Marvel” will be out in theaters March 8, 2019.
