By almost every account out of the Cannes Film Festival, Channing Tatum delivers one of his finest performances yet in Bennett Miller‘s "Foxcatcher," a wrestling drama that left more than its fair share of scars on the actor. Talking with Vulture this spring about a sequence in which he breaks a mirror, Tatum recalls pushing himself to the point where he didn’t realize the physical strength he was putting into it. "I went through the wall on the other side," he said. "You get jacked up and you don’t really think, Oh, I’m just gonna hit it hard enough to break the mirror. I missed a stud by about four inches. The cut on my head, that was real."
But that intensity was brought by everyone involved with the film, including co-stars Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo, who earned their share of strong notices too. But it’s Tatum who stands tall in the first poster for "Foxcatcher." Based on a true story, the movie recounts the odd and tragic story of John du Pont, the millionaire who provides state-of-the-art facilities for wrestling brothers Dave and Mark Schultz to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. But soon, a psychological power play between all three leads to some dark corners in a movie we declared "epic, sprawling, almost ancient in its mythic overtones."
