With “The Old Guard” continuing to prove that Charlize Theron is one of the best action actors around, it seems like the world is finally ready for a sequel to the underappreciated action thriller “Atomic Blonde.” Indeed, Theron just confirmed we may get “Atomic Blonde 2” soon, at Netflix.
Speaking with Total Film, Theron opened up about the possibilities of “The Old Guard 2,” simply saying it’s a possibility but nothing is set in stone. Instead, Theron confirmed the return of another badass action character she has played. “We took [“Atomic Blonde 2”] to them and Scott Stuber [Head of Original Films at Netflix] was really interested in it,” Theron said. “We talked to him about it extensively, and we’re in the process of writing it right now. That character was set up in a way where she didn’t really reveal much of herself. So I feel like there’s a lot of potential there. The bar’s pretty high, but we’re excited about it.”
The original “Atomic Blonde” was directed by David Leitch and had Theron play a ruthless spy killing her way through a Cold War double-crossing conspiracy. The last we heard about this project, Leitch had teased conversations about the sequel moving to a streaming service, but now it seems like they found a home for the movie.
Of course, Leitch will most likely shoot his other action movie, “Bullet Train” and his adaptation of “The Division,” before returning to the “Atomic Blonde” universe, so it may be a while before we get more of Theron’s badass assassin. That being said, any “Atomic Blonde” news is good news.
The original movie suffered from too many comparisons to Leitch’s other action franchise, “John Wick,” but it nevertheless managed to provide a different enough experience to warrant a modest success in theaters. If lesser films get two or three sequels, why not “Atomic Blonde”?
