By most accounts, Chevy Chase is not the easiest guy to work with. If you’ve ever heard any of the stories from his days on “Community,” working with Dan Harmon, you start to realize that maybe there’s a reason why Chase’s best days are well behind him. Apparently, he’s burned quite a few bridges over the decades. This is all to say that it makes complete sense that the actor-comedian would give his completely uncensored, and probably unpopular, opinion about the current state of “Saturday Night Live.”
In an interview on the new Netflix show “Norm Macdonald has a Show,” which features the recently-controversial host Norm Macdonald, Chase talked about one of the things that really bugs him about the new crop of folks over at ‘SNL.’ For those unfamiliar with Chase’s pre-“Vacation” acting period, he was one of the first cast members of ‘SNL’ and helped introduce the “Live from New York…it’s Saturday Night!” line that begins each episode. And the actor just hates how it’s being done now.

“I mean it just gets so bad, and it seems like some guys are out there just to be the guy who says, ‘Live from New York,’ and then does it poorly. Anyway, that’s not nice of me to say, but…fuck ’em,” said Chase (via CinemaBlend).
He goes on to explain where the genesis of the now-iconic line comes from, “I did it as if I were an announcer like Don Pardo…the reason I did it is because there was another show because we couldn’t say ‘Saturday Night Live.’ There was a show called ‘Saturday Night Live with Howard Cossell’ and I think Lorne felt, and rightfully so, that it’s important to say that it’s live because there’s so many sketches and actors. It’s not easy…”
Chase has a famously tenuous relationship with Lorne Michaels and the rest of ‘SNL.’ One would think that saying things like this isn’t going to help that very much.
