Norm Macdonald Apologizes For His "Unforgivable" Apology From The Day Before

A couple days ago, we reported that comedian Norm Macdonald, while promoting his upcoming Netflix talk show, “Norm Macdonald has a Show,” gave an unfortunate interview with THR. In the interview, Macdonald spoke up about the hot issues of the day, including Donald Trump, #MeToo, and Roseanne Barr. Except, instead of giving answers that the public (and probably Netflix) would have liked, he proceeded to say a variety of quotes that got him in trouble.

What followed only made things worse.

Macdonald was then scheduled to appear on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” but that appearance was abruptly canceled, as the backlash began to grow against the comedian. Then, attempting to explain himself and apologize on “The Howard Stern Show,” he dug himself into a deeper hole, when he said (via Deadline), “You’d have to have Down syndrome to not feel sorry” for what he said about victims of sexual assault in the THR interview.

Clearly, Macdonald was hoping to put everything behind him, but using Down syndrome in a negative connotation, to describe something stupid he said, put the negative spotlight right back on him. That leads us to today, where Macdonald attempted to again apologize, but to expand that apology to include his remarks from yesterday.

“I realized at that moment I’d done something unforgivable,” Macdonald said on “The View” about saying “Down syndrome” during the Stern interview. “It’s always bad when you have to apologize for the apology.”

The comedian then began to explain why he used the term “Down syndrome” to describe a stupid act, “There used to be a word we all used to say to mean ‘stupid’ that we don’t use anymore, and stupidly I was about to say that word and then stopped and thought [about] what’s the right word to say.”

Clearly, he is talking about using the “R-word” that has become less and less acceptable in recent years. Unfortunately for Macdonald, who apparently isn’t the quickest on his feet, he ended up using what he thought was a more sanitized version and ended up failing pretty badly.

There’s good news and bad news for Norm Macdonald this week. The good news is that many people didn’t realize Macdonald had an upcoming show on Netflix, and now they do. However, the bad news is that in the process of trying to get the word out, he’s the latest celebrity to say something controversial. We’ll have to see how this affects “Norm Macdonald has a Show” when it premieres tomorrow on Netflix.
