As seen in the new trailer for the film, “Chicuarotes” follows the story of two young men in Mexico, trying to get out of their “shitty town” by any means necessary. And considering the aforementioned description of the film being a “crime drama,” you can guess just what means the duo find themselves utilizing for cash. Except, as the trailer so clearly points out, one of the crimes that they conduct is a robbery on a bus dressed as street-performing clowns.

Bernal has been leading up to another directorial effort for years. He first jumped into directing with 2007’s “Deficit,” and then has directed seven short films since and two episodes of TV (including “Mozart In The Jungle” which he starred in). 12 years after his directorial debut, he’s back with “Chicuarotes.”

“Chicuarotes” is scheduled to have its debut at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Bernal has history at the French event, having won the Chopard Trophy in 2003, thanks to the aforementioned “Y Tu Mamá También.” He was also nominated for the Golden Camera award in 2007.
