'What/If' Trailer: Renée Zellweger Gives A Married Couple An Indecent Proposal In New Netflix Thriller

Renée Zellweger is a long way from the ‘Bridget Jones’ franchise. As seen in the new trailer for her Netflix series “What/If,” the Oscar-winning actress has traded in her every woman persona for that of a rich and powerful villain.

In “What/If,” Zellweger stars as a ruthless woman that gives a married couple a pretty lucrative, but devious, business proposition. From there, chaos ensues with Zellweger’s character being shown to be a bit of a master manipulator with a dark past. “What/If” is described as a “neo-noir social thriller,” but you’d be hard-pressed to find anything about this series (based on the trailer, at least) that would separate it from other soapy dramas.

That soapy-ness is likely due to the fact that writer-producer Mike Kelley is the showrunner for “What/If.” You probably recognize his name from his previous series, including the similarly soapy thriller “Revenge” and the teen drama “The O.C.” The new series is also said to be a 10-episode “limited” series, but there is also plenty of room to continue “What/If” if the series becomes yet another hit for Netflix.

The series stars Zellweger alongside Jane Levy, Blake Jenner, Samantha Ware, Keith Powers, Daniella Pineda, Juan Castano, John Clarence Stewart, Dave Annable, and Louis Herthum.

“What/If” arrives on Netflix on May 24.

Here’s the synopsis:

Neo-noir social thriller WHAT/IF explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. The first season of the Netflix original series focuses on a mysterious woman’s lucrative, but dubious offer to a cash-strapped pair of San Francisco newlyweds.
