Christopher McQuarrie Planning R-Rated Movie With Tom Cruise Playing A Very "Un-Tom Character"

Christopher McQuarrie has pushed Tom Cruise and movie stunts to great heights with his work on the “Mission: Impossible” movies, but McQuarrie has revealed that he has plans for a new film with Tom Cruise that will surprise fans of the actor with an unlikely role.

Speaking to Empire, the “Jack Reacher” director talked about how he still hasn’t fully let go of the franchise, and has instead held talks with Cruise about a new, grittier, installment. “Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take [‘Jack Reacher’] to a place where, in the post-‘Deadpool’, post-‘Joker’ world, [‘Jack Reacher’] could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books,” McQuarrie said. “We were fully ready to lean into that.”

While it seems that project isn’t moving forward, McQuarrie teases another R-rated project for the near future. “It’s a very un-Tom character,” the director continued. “And we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future. The franchise has moved on, and we haven’t. So we’ve now got stuff in the hopper. The [Jack Reacher] stuff we’re talking about now is tinker toys [compared to it], I’m actually very, very excited.”

While that sounds intriguing, it seems we’re going to have to wait a while before any progress in made on the projects. For the time being, the pair is still working on their back-to-back “Mission: Impossible” sequels, which they hope to continue filming after lockdown restrictions lift.
