Actress Lily James toplines a new take on the Sylvester Stallone-led rock-climbing action-adventure film “Cliffhanger,” as the film’s new distributor, NEON (taking over for Row K Entertainment after some financial hiccups), has pushed the film’s release date into early 2027.
The pic is said to have a budget in the $100 million range, and it also co-stars former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, who recently joined Chris Hemsworth‘s “Extraction 3,” and is now set for release in the United States by NEON on February 24, 2027 (via JoBlo). It was helmed by Spanish filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, best known for projects like the Liam Neeson actioner “Run All Night,” Disney‘s “Jungle Cruise,” the wildly popular Netflix airport thriller “Carry-On,” and Dwayne Johnson‘s one-and-done entry in the DC Universe, “Black Adam.”
In the original 1993 Stallone movie, a group of professional rock climbers are thrust into a plot involving dangerous armed thieves. A synopsis for the new film from the outlet gives us some insight into what the remake will be all about, focused more on a kidnapping:
“Ray Cooper (Brosnan) is a seasoned mountaineer who runs a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with his daughter. When a weekend excursion with a billionaire’s son turns violent, they are targeted by a group of kidnappers. As the attack unfolds, Ray’s daughter, Naomi (James), still haunted by a tragic climbing accident, escapes into the mountains and must fight for survival against both nature and her pursuers.”
Back in 2025, James shared her excitement for audiences to experience the project during a chat with THR: “Oh my God, I had the time of my life. It was so hard. I did five hours of climbing a day for many weeks. I was on mountains nonstop. I fell completely in love with it,” James shares. “It’s the most mind-body-soul activity. And I’m a [mountain-climbing] addict now. I did all my own climbing [in the film], and I got real strong. I was just pounding press-ups between every take…I’m really proud of ‘Cliffhanger.’ I’m so excited. We’re in the edit and getting it ready, and I’m super hopeful. It is such a cool reimagining, and while it’s really unexpected at times, it keeps all the gripping glory of the original. I hope.”
Collet-Serra has two more films on deck after “Cliffhanger”: the thrillers “Play Dead” and “Innocent Girl.” The supporting cast on NEON’s remake features Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba, and Bruno Gouery.
