Marvel Studios has been facing many difficulties with its next “Avengers” installment following the departure of director Destin Daniel Cretton, who left to focus on other Marvel projects (“Wonder Man” and the “Shang Chi” sequel). Screenwriter Jeff Loveness exited as well, but none of that really compares to the firing of Jonathan Majors, who was set to play the film’s villain, Kang The Conqueror, and let go after he was convicted in connection to a violent altercation with his ex-girlfriend (now awaiting sentencing that will be handed down in April). The studio has faced many challenges and choices since then: recast or go with another villain and change the direction of the movie, which would incur a considerable rewrite overthink.
Rumors of who could replace Majors as Kang have been swirling online, and in a new interview with Vanity Fair, actor Colman Domingo (“Fear The Walking Dead,” “The Color Purple”) admitted he’s heard the rumors, doesn’t know if they’re true, but would be interested if approached.
“You know, listen. My team has had conversations with Marvel about some aspect of the MCU for years,” Colman explained. “Do I know this to be true or not? I actually don’t know. I feel like my team doesn’t bring me something unless it’s real. So I don’t know. I could be in conversation, but I’m not sure. I would welcome a conversation around it.”
“Whatever they’re working out with Jonathan [Majors] and his legacy in the MCU, I feel like I just have to be in my own lane, whatever that is,” he continued. “There’s hearsay, there’s conversations, but I’m not even sure because I feel like nothing comes to me until something’s real. But I’d be down with it.”
Domingo also said he’d love to play a future James Bond villain if the opportunity came his way.
Domingo seems to thrive playing heroic figures like civil rights icon Bayard Rustin in the Oscar-nominated film “Rustin” earning him a Best Actor nomination for his performance, and villains like recently voicing the gigantic robotic alien evildoer Unicron in “Transformers: Rise of The Beasts.”
For now, Kang is said to still be part of the “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” which has been mostly just referred to as “Avengers 5” with MCU writer Michael Waldron (“Loki,” “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness”) taking over screenwriting duties from Loveness.
“Avengers 5” is still set for a release date of May 1, 2026, by Disney, but we’re still waiting for an official announcement from Marvel about a replacement director. And considering production isn’t likely going to happen until next year, they have plenty of time to get all their ducks in a row.
