'The Comey Rule's Billy Ray To Make Showtime Series About The U.S. Capitol Insurrection Attack & Final Days Of The Trump Administration

Following their last successful American political show, “The Comey Rule,” Showtime is looking to make a limited series about another big and timely news topic with the same creators. This time they’ll be moving forward with a project about the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capital back on January 6.

According to Deadline, Showtime is again collaborating with writer/director Billy Ray (“Shattered Glass“) and writer Shane Salerno on the project that will focus on multiple perspectives about the attack and the Trump Administration’s final days. The pair are behind the Golden Globe-nominated HBO limited series “The Comey Rule,” which focused on the relationship between President Donald Trump and FBI Director James Comey as the President fired Comey as a way to kill an investigation into Russian meddling into the 2016 election and the Trump campaign’s ties to that. Billy Ray will write and direct the series, with Shane taking the role of executive producer.

The Capitol events came after a frenzied Trump rally amped-up a crowd of already-agitated supporters and organized domestic terrorists, which broke into the Capitol building brutalizing law enforcement and leading to multiple deaths. Donald Trump was also calling upon his Republican allies in the Senate to stall or stop the delegate count in their last-ditch attempt to curb the election results after weeks/months pushing “The Big Lie,” which was multiple false claims about mass voter fraud leading to the Joe Biden win in November. The former President had been caught on tape trying to intimidate Georgia election officials into skewing the election results his way, a federal offense.

There is plenty of material to adapt for a series because of the extensive deep-dive reporting along with multiple stories on the insurrectionists that the FBI has arrested over the last couple of months. Imagine the possibilities and point of view, potentially from insurrectionists, domestic terrorists, the former president, the former Vice President; this could go on forever if they wanted. This approach feels ripe for deep-diving exploration. There are challenges to multiple perspectives as well, but suffice to say, this sounds like an intriguing show.
