Maria Bakalova Confirms Cosmo Role in 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3'

There are still plenty of mysteries surrounding “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol .3” as we’ll finally get to see Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter, along with all the regulars back after multiple delays on the third installment. However, there is an interesting twist on a returning character that we didn’t see coming.

While speaking with MTV News, actress Maria Bakalova (“Borat 2,” “The Bubble”), a new addition to the cast, confirmed to the outlet that she’ll be playing Cosmo the dog in the sequel. “I can say that she’s a golden retriever and reference of the first dog has been into the cosmos from the Soviet Union,” the actress stated – a direct nod to Cosmo’s origin, as that character wears a Soviet-era spacesuit.

Adding that she was on set not just in a sound booth recording her voice which means Bakalova stood in for Cosmo during scenes, similar to Sean Gunn routinely standing in for Rocket Raccoon.

Bakalova mentions Cosmo being a golden retriever, which would likely indicate they’re going for the animatronic Disney Parks incarnation from Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! instead of the version of the Guardians member from the original movie. In the comics, Cosmo has the ability to speak and doesn’t really get along with the smart-mouthed Rocket Raccoon.

This will also be the final outing for Gunn, who reiterated that this is the end of the story for this group of Guardians while also speaking with MTV over the weekend. “Listen, I don’t know what is going to happen, but what I do know is this is the end of the story of this group of Guardians,” Gunn said.

Will we see Sly Stallone’s team, made up of the original roster of the Guardians, take up the mantle in future films or could we see a group like the Starjammers – space pirates led by Cyclops’ father – take over? Only time will tell.

“Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3” will blast into theaters on May 5, 2023.
