While “Stranger Things” and scripted series of that ilk carry the headlines for Netflix, it’s clear, by now, the streaming service’s bread and butter are documentaries and docuseries. And with the upcoming release of “Crip Camp,” the streaming platform adds another must-see doc to its library.
As seen in the new trailer for the film, “Crip Camp” tells the story of a camp for teenagers with disabilities that was run by hippies during the era of Woodstock and free love. And while that makes for some entertaining footage of teens “smoking dope” with counselors and having a blast in a time when many people with disabilities were sent to institutions, the real power of “Crip Camp” comes from the camaraderie and love that the teens that went to Camp Jened experienced over the summer.
“Crip Camp” comes from directors Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht and is produced by Higher Ground, which is the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama. The film debuted at this year’s Sundance, where it earned the Audience Award for Documentary and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
“Crip Camp” will debut on Netflix on March 25. You can watch the trailer below.
