Even though we are in the cold, dark days of winter, we can start to look forward to spring and what’s to come with the April Criterion releases. And boy, do we have a busy April for new discs.

Leading the way in April is none other than one of the leading Oscar candidates of the year, “Anora.” As you might expect, the Criterion release is jam-packed with special features, including two commentary tracks, a new making-of documentary, new interviews, and, of course, a new 4K digital master overseen by filmmaker Sean Baker. In the same month as “Anora,” we also get a Criterion release of one of Baker’s earlier films, “Prince of Broadway.”

Also in April, we have “Chungking Express,” from the master filmmaker Wong Kar-wai. The film sports a 4K restoration, as well as featuring a 2002 interview with cinematographer Christopher Doyle and an episode of “Moving Pictures” from 1996 featuring interviews with both Wong and Doyle. Though it might be a little light on special features, it’s always good to see Wong films get the 4K treatment.
April also brings the 4K release of “Some Like It Hot” from director Billy Wilder. While there aren’t a ton of new special features on the release, it still does feature a 4K restoration of the film, as well as numerous making-of docs and interviews with folks.
As if those films weren’t enough, there are also films such as Julian Schnabel’s impressionistic portrait of a celebrated artist, “Basquait,” an exquisite ghost story directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, “Ugetsu,” and Claude Berri’s sprawling tale of greed and betrayal, “Jean de Florette / Manon of the Spring.”
As always, you can pre-order these discs on Criterion’s website.
