There was some suggestions yesterday by Nikki Finke and noticed by us that “The Dark Knight” figures might have been jacked by Warner Bros., who did this very thing with their “Speed Racer” numbers in May and got caught red-handed.
But guess again. Not only did Warner Bros. accurately report their box-office stats, when all was said and done, they managed to under report the numbers and instead of a $151 million haul, ‘Dark Knight’ scored a tremendous 158.3 million total which as Finke notes, “comfortably beats” the “Spider-Man 3” record of $151.1M for best-ever 3-day non-holiday weekend.
This should appease the geeks who have been rather perturbed by the mere suggestion that “The Dark Knight” isn’t the greatest movie of all time and not as good as “The Godfather II” and “Citizen Kane.” Let’s face it, bigger is better, so this pretty much means, it’s waaaay better than those films, no? Hey man, numbers don’t lie. Those box-office receipts didn’t sell themselves. In yr face prestige cinema!
