Got a Tip?

David Arquette To Reprise His Sheriff Dewey Role In Upcoming ‘Scream’ Film

Sheriff Dewey Riley is coming back to battle Ghostface in the upcoming revival of the “Scream” film franchise.

According to Deadline, David Arquette, who played the somewhat dimwitted, but loyal, Dewey in Wes Craven’s horror franchise has signed on to appear in the upcoming “Scream” reboot-quel from Radio Silence and Spyglass Media Group.

Arquette said, “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my ‘Scream’ family, old and new. ‘Scream’ has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

The new film is co-written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The “Scream” revival is produced and directed by Radio Silence (the trio of filmmakers consisting of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella).

Radio Silence added, “It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the ‘Scream’ movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers. Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of ‘Scream’ to life.”

While plot specifics are not known at this time, it appears that Radio Silence is following the blueprint that was recently used to reboot the horror franchise, “Halloween,” for a new generation by having returning characters revisit the franchise that they helped launch, while also introducing a new story and new characters to carry the torch.

Recently, it was revealed that Neve Campbell, who starred in the four “Scream” films, is in talks to return to the new film, alongside Arquette. The report also claims that there are discussions about having more cast members from the original films come back to the film series.

The next “Scream” film is expected to begin filming in North Carolina when the studio gets the greenlight that it’s safe to do so.
