'Ready Or Not' Filmmakers Will Helm A New 'Scream' Film

As was rumored last fall, “Scream” is the latest horror franchise to get revived for a new audience. But as much as that might make genre fans roll their eyes a bit, it appears that Spyglass Media has found some pretty great filmmakers to bring the new “Scream” to the big screen.

According to THR, co-directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, along with producer Chad Villela, who make up the filmmaking group known as Radio Silence, have been signed on by Spyglass Media to bring “Scream” back to life. The report isn’t sure about the nature of the new film, if it’ll be a sequel to 2011’s “Scream 4” or if the studio is hoping to go with a full-blown reboot of the franchise.

“Scream” is the iconic horror franchise created by director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson that took the tropes of the slasher subgenre and flipped them on its head with a meta-story that would go on to become one of the most influential horror film series of all time. However, it’s important to note that whatever this new “Scream” film turns out to be, it will mark the first time that Wes Craven isn’t around to direct or help create the film, as the filmmaker sadly passed away back in 2015.

That being said, Radio Silence is a collective that has already proven to be pretty well equipped in the horror genre, particularly with last year’s surprise hit, “Ready or Not.” That film, with only a $6 million budget, went on to gross more than $57 million worldwide and became one of the better horror releases of 2019. And it’s clear why “Ready or Not” is a great calling card for a filmmaking group that is interested in joining the “Scream” franchise, as the 2019 film was able to mix horror and humor with plenty of cleverness that became a staple of Craven’s franchise.

There’s no release date set for the new “Scream.”
