‘Brawler’: Zack Snyder To Direct & Co-Write UFC Movie With ‘Rebel Moon’ Screenwriters

Director Zack Snyder‘s next feature film has finally been revealed to us, after a string of high-profile Netflix movies, and will explore a mixed martial arts fighter.

Today, The Playlist has learned that Snyder is behind “Brawler,” a new sports film set in the world of UFC (the Ultimate Fighting Championship), with the organization’s Dana White and HE Turki Alalshikh backing the project. This new feature film will focus on a young fighter from Los Angeles making his way through the league as he seeks redemption in the octagon.

Snyder will direct “Brawler” from a script that he co-wrote with “Rebel Moon” screenwriters Shay Hatten (“Ballerina,” John Wick 4,” “Army of The Dead”) and Kurt Johnstad (“300,” “Atomic Blonde”).

“Behind every great fighter is the story of how they got there,” Snyder said in an official statement on the new film. “UFC is the world leader in combat sports, and I’m honored to be partnering with them to tell this incredible story.”

An official logline for “Brawler” provided to us reads:

Rising from the rough streets of Los Angeles, a young fighter gets a shot at a UFC championship, battling his inner demons as he fights for redemption.

The producing team on “Brawler” features Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller of Stone Quarry, Hatten, Johnstad, Alalshikh, and UFC Chief Content Officer Craig Borsari.

Mixed martial arts has been mined before with modern sports dramas such as Gavin O’Connor‘s family-focused “Warrior” along with the upcoming A24 release, “The Smashing Machine,” from director Benny Safdie (“Uncut Gems”), tackling a biopic about MMA fighter Mark Kerr starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
