There have been a surprising number of pandemic films that have been released over the last year. In a world where people were on lockdown with very little to do outside of their homes, it seems as if some filmmakers have been able to use that time to still create films. Whether that’s the various short films from folks like David F. Sandberg, Spike Lee, amongst others or fully-produced features like Shudder’s surprisingly great “Host” or the dreadful, Michael Bay-produced thriller, “Songbird.” And over at NEON, the studio decided to go a different route with the studio’s upcoming feature, “The Year of the Everlasting Storm.”

According to Screen Daily, NEON’s new pandemic-inspired film, “The Year of the Everlasting Storm,” was showcased as part of the recent “The Big Screen is Back” event that happened as a way to get people excited about going to cinemas once again. And with the tease, we were given the names of filmmakers that combined their talents to craft what is sure to be one of the most interesting pandemic-era films to be produced.
The anthology film features portions directed by acclaimed filmmakers such as Jafar Panahi, Anthony Chen, Malik Vitthal, Laura Poitras, Dominga Sotomayor, David Lowery, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The film is described as a love letter to cinema, with each director crafting their portion of the film during the pandemic. If you’re a fan of cinema, the names should immediately create excitement for the feature.
Lowery is the man behind a number of interesting films and is creating quite the buzz for his upcoming fantasy film, “The Green Knight.” Then you have Weerasethakul, who is a filmmaking legend that is about to make his English-language debut with “Memoria” starring Tilda Swinton. Panahi’s most recent film is “Three Faces,” but he’s probably best known for the drama, “Taxi.” And if you don’t know Sotomayor (“Too Late to Die Young”), Vitthal (“Body Cam”), Chen (“Wet Season”), and Poitras (“Citizenfour”), then there are plenty of great films you can check out before “The Year of the Everlasting Storm” arrives.
It’s unclear when “The Year of the Everlasting Storm” will actually be released in theaters, but considering it’s part of the recent cinema appreciation event, a 2021 debut is likely.
