'Dawn Of The Jedi': James Mangold To Direct New 'Star Wars' Film Set 25,000 Years In The Past

A while back there had been rumblings that Lucasfilm was looking to work with “Logan” director James Mangold on a possible film focused on Boba Fett, and while that ultimately never happened and he ended up tackling “Indiana Jones” for the studio instead with “Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny,” he’s officially joining the “Star Wars” franchise.

During today’s launch of Star Wars Celebration in London the studio announced that Mangold will be directing a new feature film. Not only that, but, “Dawn of The Jedi” will explore the origins of the Jedi taking place in the earliest era in the “Star Wars” franchise ahead of The Old Republic.

This would likely mean a totally brand new era and allows creatives like Mangold to stretch-out their imagination without having to be terribly beholden to established “Star Wars” canon. However, it’s not entirely clear if any characters from Legends or canon will be part of the film as the setting could only leave room for newish stories to be told. It certainly sounds like the project that was in early development from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, that was thought to be scrapped after their departure.

I guess we’ll have to wait to see if “Dawn of The Jedi” will get a similar push from the publishing side of the company as they’ve done with The High Republic, the setting of “The Acolyte.” Exploring the past certainly will make this upcoming film feel different enough from other films and we can’t wait to get more details on it in the future.

Mangold as previously mentioned recently helmed “Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny” as that pic will swing into theaters on June 30.
