'Little Miss Sunshine' Directors Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris Remaking Spanish Comedy 'The People Upstairs'

Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are getting their next film project together and it will be a remake of a recent Spanish comedy. The directing team, of course, is behind movies such as “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Ruby Sparks,” the sports drama “Battle of The Sexes,” and most recently worked on the Netflix comedy series, “Living With Yourself,” that starred Paul Rudd.

Deadline reports the directing duo is going to remake “The People Upstairs,” aka, “Sentimental” with FilmNation backing the financing and aiming to begin shooting later this year. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are behind the remake’s script and previously worked together on Pixar‘s “Toy Story 4.”

The original movie comes from director Cesc Gay, who also wrote and directed the play the film was based on.

Here is the film’s logline if you’re not familiar with the comedy:

Julio and Ana have been together for over fifteen years. They don’t look at each other or touch each other anymore and daily conflicts have become the norm. This evening, Ana has invited the upstairs neighbors over. Salva and Laura are slightly younger than them and welcomed them with open arms when they moved into the building, but the constant moaning and groaning coming from their apartment has become a source of arguments for Julio and Ana… perhaps it’s jealousy, they wish their own sex life was as spicy.

It’s unclear if Jones will also take an acting role on the project, but the option seems to be there given the four main parts will be needed to be filled. The directors could seek actors they’ve worked with in the past, given most have the comedic chops perfect for something like this.
