Mary Elizabeth Winstead Says She’s Ready & Willing To Reprise Huntress Role

Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead started out her film career playing the daughter of Bruce Willis‘ John McClane in “Live Free or Die Hard, but has carved out a big career since then, including the action genre. Ater playing badass DC Comics character The Huntress in Cathy Yan‘s “Birds of Prey,” Winstead has taken the action side of her career even recently, further working with producer David Leitch for the Netflix action thriller,”Kate.”

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Winstead was asked about the likelihood of returning the Huntress role in the wake of the news of the studio making a “Black Canary” movie led by her co-star Jurnee Smollett and written by Misha Green (“Tomb Raider 2,” “Lovecraft Country“). In short, she’s game if it’s an option.

“If it came together in the right way, it would be so much fun. I know that Jurnee [Smollett] is doing a ‘Black Canary’ movie, which I’m so excited for. She’s amazing and she’s going to kill that, so I can’t wait to see where that goes. I don’t know if that’s going to involve Huntress or not, but I love that character and I love the version that we were able to create in ‘Birds of Prey,'” Winstead said of the potential of her return to the DCEU.

However, the shoot for “Birds of Prey” was grueling because of the film’s action scenes using long takes. Before agreeing to do “Kate,” she had to secure assurances from director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan that she’d get edits to break up the scenes. It sounds like breaking up the action scenes might be something she’ll need to happen before signing on for future projects.

“Most action movies break it up into pieces, and just the way that Cathy [Yan] directed it, she wanted these beautiful, long, cinematic, no-cuts kind of movements. And that looked really cool, but it was really hard to pull off,” the actress said of the tiring shoot of “Birds of Prey.”

“Kate” certainly cements the actress as someone built for action and has now worked with the same stunt team (87Eleven Action Design) behind movies like the “John Wick” franchise, Charlize Theron‘s “Atomic Blonde,” and the recent Bob Odenkirk project “Nobody” giving her a set of skills a lot of her male peers don’t have under their belt.
