'Lovecraft Country's Misha Green Writing A 'Black Canary' Project For Jurnee Smollett

WarnerMedia loves to develop a heap of DC Comics projects, and it sounds like we’ll be getting another one. A report from the usually reliable Cinelinx states that Misha Green (“Lovecraft Country“) is currently writing a project (could be a film or series) that will focus on Jurnee Smollett‘s Black Canary from “Birds of Prey.” The pair had previously worked together on “Lovecraft Country,” so a reunion would make sense on paper.

They also note the project could ultimately land at HBO Max as the streaming service is behind a wave of diverse DC Comics films. Adding that the project’s announcement is expected in October during DC FanDome.

Green is a busy bee as the rising talent is attached to write and direct a sequel to Alicia Vikander‘s (“The Green Knight“) “Tomb Raider” for MGM Studios and recently signed a deal with Apple after HBO passed on the second season of “Lovecraft Country.” At this point, it’s only indicated she’ll write the new superhero project.

We’ll have to wait to find out if this will share a similar mature tone as “Birds of Prey” or pivot to become more accessible to younger audiences.

This would be the first true spinoff from Cathy Yan‘s R-rated “Birds of Prey” and would be yet another female-led DC Comics project in the pipeline after “Batgirl,” “Zatanna,” and “Madame X” series for HBO Max produced by J.J. Abrams was previously announced.

However, while WarnerMedia has been more committal lately with newer DC projects, not everything that goes into development ends up getting made. Not too long ago, Ava DuVernay‘s “New Gods” movie was placed on pause while she focuses on comic book shows such as “DMZ” and “Naomi.”

Update: the report has been confirmed by Smollett herself, and it is apparently a movie, not a series.
