Recently, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was released on HBO Max and seemingly put an end to the Snyderverse chapter of the DCEU. (Okay, sure #RestoreTheSnyderverse is being seen all over social media, but the higher-ups at WB have been pretty clear about wanting to move on.) So, with all of that in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to focus on the future of DC superhero films.
And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, Charles, Mike, and Brian go down the list of every DC superhero film that is currently on the release schedule, in development, or previously discussed. This includes sequels for “Wonder Woman,” “Aquaman,” and “Shazam!” as well as brand-new franchises like “The Batman,” “Batgirl,” “Blue Beetle,” and various films/TV shows that JJ Abrams is overseeing. Needless to say, it’s an extensive list and there are some clear highlights, as well as some obvious stinkers.
Overall, however, it’s readily apparent that WarnerMedia is hoping to move forward with a plan that includes, well, lots of plans. Forgoing the depth and connectivity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC superhero film plan involves various filmmakers putting their own spin on heroes with the focus being on story and less on universe-building. This means we’ll see more traditional sequels such as “Aquaman 2,” as well as unique endeavors like “Hourman,” “Zatanna,” and a Gotham City PD crime drama spinning out of “The Batman” on HBO Max.
