Few saw “Deadpool” coming, but the movie proved to be something of a shot in the arm of the superhero movie when it hit a little under two years ago. A long time passion project for star Ryan Reynolds, the post-modern, R-rated, fourth-wall-shattering masked hero connected with fans and general audiences in a big way, melding vaguely juvenile gore and swears with an unexpected sweetness to the tune of $800 million worldwide or so, outgrossing “X-Men: Days OF Future Past” and “Logan” to make it Fox’s biggest-ever X-Men-related movie, despite the restrictive rating and a far cheaper budget than most.
A sequel was swiftly greenlit, though wasn’t without its bumps — original director Tim Miller dropped out after creative differences, with “John Wick” and “Atomic Blonde” helmer David Leitch stepping in. And with the movie’s release now just six months away, Fox have delivered a proper first trailer for the movie.
Well, kind of: as always with this property, the marketing’s a little different, with much of the clip involving the Merc With The Mouth delivering a faux painting class, before a blast of new footage at the end. But still, fans should be happy to see not just the returning cast members here, but also newcomers Josh Brolin as iconic X-favorite Cable, and Zazie Beetz as Domino. Here’s the official synopsis:
After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.
