One of the most anticipated films coming from Marvel Studios over the next year or so (let’s hope for an end to these strikes soon enough) is definitely “Deadpool 3,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Fans are obsessed with the idea of Reynolds’ Deadpool getting to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Wolverine and also show that the MCU can go fully R-rated. Well, unfortunately, filming was stopped because of the strikes, but that doesn’t mean director Shawn Levy can’t tease what’s to come.
Speaking to Deadline (video below), Shawn Levy was asked about the work that was already done on “Deadpool 3,” and he also did the patented thing where a superhero film director compares the blockbuster film to classics in another genre. You know, the thing that pisses off cinephiles because they hate to hear the Russo Brothers claim “Avengers: Infinity War” is sorta like Robert Altman’s “Nashville.”
As for the status of “Deadpool 3,” Levy confirms the obvious—production is “paused” due to the SAG and WGA strikes—and said they are “halfway through filming.” But the delay in filming isn’t dampening his excitement for the project, especially when it comes to the interplay in the film between Reynolds and Jackman, who have been teasing a Deadpool/Wolverine team-up for years now.
“That chemistry—spoiler alert—is as relentlessly awesome as we all hoped it would be,” Levy said.
There were also plenty of fans who were concerned by Levy taking over the “Deadpool” franchise for a third film. After director Tim Miller directed the incredible first film in the franchise, “John Wick” co-creator David Leitch helmed the sequel, which seemed to ratchet up the action and spectacle while keeping the soul of the franchise intact. Levy understands this and understands what makes “Deadpool” so good.
“Long before I loved Ryan Reynolds, I loved ‘Deadpool.’ I love ‘Deadpool,’” explained Levy. “‘Deadpool 1,’ to me, is a perfect movie. I was not going to mess with the DNA of that franchise. Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated. We went to great lengths to not shoot on soundstages or digital environments… We wanted something that felt grounded, real.”
He continued, “When you put Hugh Jackman in his iconic character, and you put Ryan Reynolds in his iconic character, I would say it’s more a descendant of ‘Midnight Run,’ ‘48 Hrs.,’ and ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles,’ than it is a descendant of ‘Airplane.’”
Hey, we can all agree that Levy comparing “Deadpool 3” to something like “Midnight Run” or “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” isn’t such a huge crime, right? He’s not saying the film is going to be the MCU’s “Schindler’s List” or anything truly ridiculous like that. At least he’s still within the comedy genre.
As of now, “Deadpool 3” is expected to arrive in theaters on May 3, 2024. But yeah, that doesn’t seem likely.
