Marvel fans geeked out hard this morning with the arrival of the trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War.” But you know what could have made it cooler? If Wolverine or Deadpool or Magneto got in the mix. Well, start dreaming about bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because rumors are flying again.
Earlier this month, rumors flared and quickly died that Disney was in talks to purchase the movie division of Fox. Of course, the attraction was obvious. If a deal went through, Disney would be bringing the X-Men clan under their roof, and the Marvel possibilities would be endless. Not to mention other big blockbuster brands like “Alien” and “Avatar” would also be on the table. At any rate, it seems like the mouse house isn’t giving up, at least according to Mike Fleming at Deadline.
“….a juicy rumor that is fast gaining steam in town today, that Disney is progressing speedily toward that rumored acquisition of Fox. The version I heard has the Murdoch clan keeping possession of sports and news properties, and the rest of TV and the film studio going to Disney. Radio silence right now from both studios, and given how Disney made the Marvel and Lucasfilm deals under the cone of silence, if this happens we’ll probably only know it when it’s announced. It is certainly being talked about today. Not surprisingly, the reaction around town is not enthusiasm, because of the uncertainty that comes with potentially reducing a major studio to content generators under the Disney silo system,” he said.
I’d imagine rival studios are also dismayed at the possibility of the already behemoth sized Disney gaining a larger footprint.
But like Fleming says, if this all works out, Disney will announce the news when they’re ready. And if it happens, the impact on Hollywood is going to be monumental.
