No one would blame Sebastian Lelio for sitting around and basking in the glow of his Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film for “A Fantastic Woman,” but the man has got work to do. The ever-busy director is currently shooting an English language remake of “Gloria” starring Julianne Moore, and shortly after the Oscars, his next film, “Disobedience,” will be rolling into cinemas. And it’s not to be missed.
Though the drama finds Lelio on a quieter dramatic register, and a much more subdued color palette, it’s all in service of a passionate story set in the cloistered world the Orthodox Jewish community in Hendon. The story follows Ronit (Rachel Weisz), who arrives from New York City to mourn the passing of her father Rav, a revered rabbi and community leader. The visit puts her back in touch with Esti (Rachel McAdams), an old friend who’s now married to a prominent member of the Hendon community. However, when the past feelings resurface, everyone’s world becomes threatened. Here’s the official synopsis:
From a screenplay by Sebastián Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the film follows a woman as she returns to the community that shunned her decades earlier for an attraction to a childhood friend. Once back, their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.
It’s a terrific film, one I called “sensual and spiritual, deeply moving and tender.” “Disobedience” opens on April 27th.
