‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Taps ‘Loki’ Show Creator To Rewrite Script

The sequel to Marvel Studio’s “Doctor Strange,” just found itself a new writer. Michael Waldron, who created Marvel’s “Loki” series for Disney+ will pen the script for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

Waldron will re-work the script previously written by Jade Bartlett, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project was originally being billed by Kevin Feige as the MCU’s “first scary movie” during last year’s Comic-Con, but news came that Scott Derrickson would not return to direct the sequel because of creative differences, confirming later that he would stay only on an executive producer capacity. Just earlier this week it was reported that Sam Raimi was in negotiation to replace Derrickson as a director, which would make him the first MCU director to already have a career making blockbuster movies on par with the ones made by Marvel.

When it comes to Waldron, he began his screenwriting career under Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries, writing on “HarmonQuest” and becoming a producer on “Rick and Morty” for its fourth season as well as writing an episode. He’s now working on the “Loki” TV series that will follow the God of Mischief as he faces the multiversal issues after he came in possession of the Tesseract in “Avengers: Endgame.” Coincidentally, Waldron is not the first writer from Starburns Industries to join Marvel, as Harmon also did re-writes in the first “Doctor Strange.”

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will bring back Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme. Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also scheduled to reprise their roles, while Elizabeth Olsen will join the cast as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch after her Disney+ series “WandaVision” gets released this December. Missing from the cast is Rachel McAdams who is not expected to reprise her role.

Disney is slated to release “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” on May 7, 2021.
