It’s not controversial to say Kevin Smith’s filmmaking career isn’t nearly as big as it was a couple of decades ago. He’s still making films, but by and large, those films are getting small runs in theaters and he’s mainly appealing to his podcast listeners for support. But if he’s able to make “Dogma 2” happen, then perhaps it could be one of his bigger films in recent memory.

Kevin Smith recently appeared at Vulture Festival (via Deadline), and while there, he broke news that he’s planning a sequel for his religious comedy, “Dogma.” For those unaware, “Dogma” is a film that followed the hijinks of two rogue angels (played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) who are trying to use a loophole to get back in God’s good graces. It’s generally seen as one of Smith’s better films.
“Some people will be like, ‘Don’t fucking touch it. You’ll ruin it,’” said Smith. “And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m fucking tickled. I found a way in.”
Smith would go into greater detail on Twitter, where he said the film doesn’t even have a script yet, but it will. And he has yet to approach Damon or Affleck about appearing in the movie. That said, he sounds confident that it’ll happen.
“To be fair, I said I started writing a sequel in my head on Thursday night,” Smith posted. “So a Dogma sequel script is eventually happening… but that doesn’t mean a movie is getting made necessarily. And while I plan to include Bartleby and Loki, I’ve not spoken to Ben or Matt about it yet.”
During his Vulture Festival appearance, he went into detail a bit more about why it’s important for Affleck and Damon to show up in the film. According to the filmmaker, those two names will allow him to secure financing and actually make the movie.
“Expect a cameo from them — more than a fucking cameo,” he said. “The only way we get a ‘Dogma’ sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.”
Smith recently released one of his most personal films in recent memory, “The 4:30 Movie.” That film played a limited release and actually has a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is good for the filmmaker. It’s unclear when we might see “Dogma 2” arrive on the big screen, but it’s clear the film is still in the very early stages of development.
