"Just when we think Korine was out of twists, he's come with another one, so we wonder what's coming next," we wrote at the end of our last update about "Spring Breakers," which was recently revealed to have electronic dance music guy Skrillex providing some music for the movie, with celebrated music supervisor Randall Poster (the Wes Anderson movies) also taking part. And as we expected, another surprise, with a big musical name now also throwing his weight in there as well.
Film Music Reporter reveals that Cliff Martinez, most recently noted for being behind the excellent scores to "Drive" and "Contagion," is now co-scoring the movie with Skrillex, which is kind of mind bending. There's no word yet on what that collaboration will entail — if they'll each do separate, distinct pieces or work together or a mix of both — but the composer is no stranger to mixing it up with musical acts. "Drive" was as noted for its tunes by Chromatics, College, Desire and more as it was for anything else, so it will be interesting see where Martinez, Skrillex and Poster meet and divide. The movie is also being described as a "comedy romance," which adds another interesting element, especially for Martinez who has mostly done dramas and thrillers.
But this is shaping up to be Korine's most commercial endeavor of all time, and certainly he's working with the kind of budget he's never had before either, being able to snare this kind of talent. The movie, starring James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, is expected to arrive in 2013, likely on the festival circuit first, we'd wager. So, what else do you got for us Korine? This gonna be post-converted to 3D, too?
