Even though Edgar Wright doesn’t necessarily hit it out of the park with each of his films (honestly, doesn’t anyone really remember 2021’s “Last Night in Soho?”), the films he’s made that people love—people obsess over. Films like “Shaun of the Dead” are still being talked about to this day, nearly 20 years after its release. And over the years, it appears Wright has had conversations about expanding on or adapting some of his popular works in other forms, but he just hasn’t pulled the trigger… yet.
Speaking on the Happy. Sad. Confused. podcast, Edgar Wright talked about why he hasn’t really made the leap into adapting some of his more beloved works into other mediums. Outside of the recently released “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” a reimagining of the ‘Scott Pilgrim’ franchise (not necessarily just Wright’s film), there hasn’t been a time when you could see another interpretation of his work. But that doesn’t mean people haven’t tried.
“There have been some conversations about that, yes,” said Wright. “We’ve been quite protective about that. A long time ago, an American company wanted to do a TV series of ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ based on the film. We were like, ‘No!’”

He added, “Sometimes when these things come up, we take them very seriously. And some things are things we are still talking about.”
Ultimately, Wright said that he’d only take the chance on an adaptation of his previous work, in TV or whatever other form, if he had “creative control.” That said, he admitted, “I know I’d be a lot richer if I said yes to everything. [laughs]”
It’s difficult to really imagine what a “Shaun of the Dead” American TV series would look like. So much of the humor and the style of that film feels very much a product of the trio of Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost. It’s difficult to imagine a situation where a TV version of that, let alone an American version, would actually be any good. But hey, who knows? Maybe it could have been the next “The Office.”
