Just recently, it was announced that Elisabeth Moss left the upcoming Jane Campion film, “The Power of the Dog,” due to scheduling conflicts. It’s unclear what the conflict might be, but perhaps that was just a precursor to today’s news that the actress is in talks to join a brand-new film from director Taika Waititi.
According to THR, Moss is in talks to join Michael Fassbender in the cast of the upcoming Waititi film, “Next Goal Wins.” The film, which is based on the recent documentary of the same name, follows the true story of the American Samoa football (soccer) team and their coach, Thomas Rongen, as the team attempts to turn their losing traditions around to try to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
As you might guess, Fassbender is set to play the coach, while Waititi is looking for unknowns to help fill out the players. It’s unclear what role Moss might play in the film.
Moss is probably best known for the Emmy-winning series “The Handmaid’s Tale.” However, in this year alone, the actress has had roles in Jordan Peele’s horror-thriller “Us” and the recent crime drama “The Kitchen.” Her next film is the Blumhouse-produced horror remake, “The Invisible Man.”
“Next Goal Wins” is directed by Waititi, who co-wrote the script with Iain Morris. The director found a small window to make the film after the upcoming release of his comedy “Jojo Rabbit” and before he ventures back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to write and direct the upcoming film, “Thor: Love & Thunder.”
There’s no release date set for “Next Goal Wins,” but it’s likely that a 2020 release date is planned, perfectly timed for when the director has to begin work on ‘Thor.’
