You Can Blame The 10-Year Delay Of 'Zombieland 2' On 'Deadpool,' According To Jesse Eisenberg

When you watch the trailer for “Zombieland 2: Double Tap,” you’re likely going to have one of two responses. Either you’re going to think, “Wow, I’m so excited that ‘Zombieland’ is back! Who cares how long it took?!” or you’re going to think, “Uh, isn’t this about ten years too late?” Well, there’s really no right or wrong answer to that. However, for the film’s star, Jesse Eisenberg, he does want everyone to know that the sequel arriving a decade after the first “Zombieland” isn’t the fault of anyone in particular. Well, except for Ryan Reynolds.

In a recent “Tonight Show” interview, Eisenberg brought up the real reason why ‘Double Tap’ is arriving a full decade after the first film. And it isn’t because of contract negotiations or availability of the A-list actors. Instead, it all came down to the schedules of the screenwriters and a little film franchise called “Deadpool.”

“We waited ten years to do the movie,” explained Eisenberg. “Well, we didn’t wait. We were trying to do the movie right after the first one because the first one was so popular. And then we just waited for the best script.”

He continued, “In the meantime, the two writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, did ‘Deadpool.’ And we were kinda waiting for them to finish that, so they can write [‘Zombieland 2’].”

Eisenberg then admits that the cast had to wait longer because the writers jumped immediately into “Deadpool 2” after the first superhero film. Now, with “Deadpool” seemingly in limbo due to the Fox/Disney merger, the writers found themselves with some free time. Enough to craft the script for ‘Double Tap.’

Is the decade wait justified by the finished product? Well, fans will have to judge for themselves when “Zombieland 2: Double Tap” arrives in theaters on October 18.
