Did you like “Mank” but really wish it was about “The Godfather” and not in black and white? And not directed by David Fincher? And not about “Citizen Kane?” Well, okay, maybe Barry Levinson’s upcoming film about the making of “The Godfather” doesn’t share too much with Fincher’s award-winning Netflix film, but they’re both about the making of classic films and they’re both getting pretty great casts.
According to Deadline, Barry Levinson is bringing on Elle Fanning to join the cast of his ‘Francis & The Godfather’ feature about the making of “The Godfather.” In the film, Fanning is set to play Ali MacGraw, the actress that married Paramount’s head of production, Robert Evans. As you might guess, the film is about Francis Ford Coppola’s attempt to bring Mario Puzo’s novel, “The Godfather,” to life.
“Elle is one of the most exciting and versatile actresses out there,” said Levinson in a statement. “I am beyond thrilled that she has joined the terrific cast of ‘Francis & The Godfather’ and will bring her unique talent to the film.”
Fanning is probably best known for her work in films such as “Super 8,” “Maleficent,” and “Neon Demon.” Most recently, she’s the star of the award-winning Hulu series, “The Great,” as well as the features, “The Roads Not Taken” and “All The Bright Places.” The young actress is also set to star opposite her sister, Dakota Fanning, in Melanie Laurent’s upcoming feature, “The Nightingale.”
“Francis & The Godfather” stars Fanning alongside Oscar Isaac as Francis Ford Coppola, Jake Gyllenhaal as Robert Evans, and Elisabeth Moss as Eleanor Coppola. The film is expected to begin production later this year, with a 2022 release date probably most likely.
