Not many people in Hollywood are lucky enough to land a career-making role almost right out of the gate. However, in the case of Emilia Clarke, that’s exactly what she did, getting one of the lead roles in “Game of Thrones” after only briefly appearing in two TV projects. And from there, the Clarke train kept chugging along, landing big role after big role. But now that ‘Thrones’ is done and the dust has cleared, it appears that the actress is ready to retreat a little from those massive roles and tackle some different types of projects.
Speaking to IndieWire, Clarke was asked about her future and what she expects to tackle in the years to come. And perhaps surprisingly, the actress isn’t interested in yet another franchise.
“Not any time soon,” the actress said. “I’m really actively looking for indies. Those are the things I’m making, as well. And those are the movies I watch.”
You can’t blame Clarke for this sort of change of course. While she’s generally lauded for her award-winning performance in ‘Thrones,’ things haven’t been totally smooth in her early career. Health issues aside (which not only threatened her career but almost cost her life), Clarke’s career decisions haven’t always panned out as expected.
Perhaps the biggest bust so far is her lead role as Sarah Connor in “Terminator: Genisys.” That film was not only expected to be a huge box office hit but also set the stage for a new series of films with Clarke at the center. However, we all know how that ended up.
In the same interview, the topic of ‘Terminator’ was brought up, as the franchise is ready to launch the latest reboot-quel, ‘Dark Fate,’ tomorrow. That film finds Linda Hamilton returning to the role of Sarah Connor and the franchise, as a whole, wiping the slate clean of all post- ‘T2’ films.
So, will Clarke take the time to watch the new ‘Terminator?’
“I’ll probably watch it, sure,” said Clarke. “I mean, why not?” She then added, “It won’t be the first movie I see.”
If you want to see the actress’ first post- ‘Thrones’ gig, her next film, “Last Christmas,” is expected to arrive in theaters on November 8.
