Emilia Clarke is about to have a lot of time on her hands. After almost a decade playing one of the leads on the biggest TV series ever, “Game of Thrones,” the actress is just about to wrap up work on the show for good, as the final season premieres next year. And it looks like Clarke has lined up another high-profile acting role, although we’re pretty sure there are no dragons involved.
According to Variety, Emilia Clarke is joining 2018 breakout actor Henry Golding for the upcoming film “Last Christmas,” from director Paul Feig. While the exact plot is still unknown, the film is being described as a holiday romance film set in London. Could we be looking at the new “Love, Actually?” We shall see.
Clarke has attempted a big-screen career previously but in the realm of major franchise films. She starred in this summer’s box office disappointment, “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and was the star of another franchise failure, “Terminator Genisys.” That being said, her feature film career does have one bright spot, with “Me Before You” a surprise hit in 2016.
Golding recently broke out in a big way as the male lead in the massive rom-com hit, “Crazy Rich Asians.” He also worked with Feig recently on the new film “A Simple Favor,” so we’re guessing that the filmmaker is keen on working with him again after that collaboration and the success of ‘Asians.’
Speaking of Feig, the filmmaker’s “A Simple Favor” debuted last weekend to an impressive box office total, and continues his streak of strong female-fronted films, which include “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” and “Ghostbusters.” Having just dabbled in the realm of the thriller with ‘Favor,’ it looks like he’s going to continue to play with genre conventions while tackling the rom-com/holiday film with “Last Christmas.”
And in a surprising turn of events, “Last Christmas” is actually the brainchild of actress Emma Thompson, who penned the script with Bryony Kimmings.
There’s no release date, yet, for “Last Christmas,” but something tells us to expect it next holiday season. What do you think?
