Emily Blunt Hopes “The Stars Will All Align” And The ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Sequel Will Actually Happen

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before—a star from the critically-acclaimed “Edge of Tomorrow” has gone on the record saying that a sequel is coming along and it might actually happen. No kidding, we’ve been talking about this mythical “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel for half a decade now, almost immediately after the first film was a surprise hit back in 2014. But now, in a brand-new interview, star Emily Blunt still teases the possibility of a second film in the franchise.

Speaking to IndieWire, Blunt, who is currently promoting a sequel to “A Quiet Place,” confirmed what filmmaker Doug Liman said last fall and said that “Edge of Tomorrow” is still coming together. However, she’s not completely convinced that it’s going to happen any time soon.

“I think there’s an idea, that he says is great,” Blunt said. “And he says this guy came in and cracked the case. How the stars will all align for us to be able to do it. I don’t know. I hope they do.”

As mentioned, in October, Liman not only said that the script for the “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel is “ready” but that the film would hopefully begin production after Tom Cruise finishes up his “Mission: Impossible” commitment. Of course, since Cruise is filming two “Mission: Impossible” sequels back-to-back, it’s going to be a while until that even happens.

Now, a month ago, I would have written off an “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel as never going to happen, and the film would forever join the ranks of “Uncharted” and “Gambit” as projects that were always on the precipice of happening but never did. But with last week’s news that “Uncharted” has found a new director and is filling out the cast, with filming beginning in a matter of weeks, who the hell knows?! We could very well be looking at a world where an “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel does get the greenlight and fans’ wishes come true.

So, let’s just move the “Is It Happening?” meter on “Edge of Tomorrow 2” from “No way in Hell” to “Eh, maybe.”
