Fly on the wall set photos have nearly replaced the studio publicity still entirely, and with two high-profile productions starring Emma Watson and Johnny Depp lensing this past week, it’s no wonder a number of glimpses at their characters have promptly hit the web.
The most surprising shots from the week come from Emma Watson, currently filming Sofia Coppola’s latest examination into the vapid pursuits of wealth and fame, “The Bling Ring.” Sporting ripped jean shorts, high heels, and a tattoo, Watson has made clear to the parents of 10-year-old Hermione fans that she’s not be trusted, and to the rest of the internet that she’s relishing the chance to try something new. Strangely enough, it recalls Elijah Wood’s attempt to step out of Frodo’s shadow in “Sin City” as the cannibalistic serial killer Kevin, but while Watson isn’t going quite that far, she’ll be portraying a rather disturbed character nonetheless.
Watson stars in Coppola’s film as the media darling rising from a real-life 2008 LA crime spree, in which privileged teens ransacked the homes of celebrities, including Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom, and used their loot to support their wild lifestyle. We found Coppola’s script to be trading in the director’s usual themes and characters, but energized by the docu-drama immediacy and feel, resulting in a caustically funny examination overall. “The Bling Ring” is filming now, and is scheduled for release in 2013. The other major sighting of the week occurred when Johnny Depp appeared for fans during production of "The Lone Ranger" currently shooting in New Mexico. An earlier publicity still first revealed Depp as Tonto, but this second view offers much relief from that initial, slightly ridiculous shot. It bears little resemblance to the Tonto of the original series, but it is too early yet to tell just how wild director Gore Verbinski will take the project. From “Rango’s” glorious evocation of western genre tropes and inspired moments though, it should be clear that Verbinski has the potential to deliver something outstanding.
