‘A Colt Is My Passport’: Gareth Evans To Remake Classic ’60s Japanese Crime Pic For Amazon MGM’s Orion Pictures

How will Gareth Evans follow up the long-awaited “Havoc,” now streaming on Netflix? World Of Reel reports (via The InSneider) that it won’t be “The Raid 3,” but instead a remake of the classic Japanese noir, 1967’s A Colt Is My Passport.”

Fans of the Criterion Collection will recognize that title from their Eclipse set, “#17: Nikkatsu Noir,” a selection of titles from a Japanese film studio that made crime movies heavily influenced by the French and American imports of the era.  Takashi Nomura‘s movie is one of Nikkatsu’s most enduring examples of its style, a formally audacious pic about a hardboiled hitman caught between rival gangs.

And to no one’s surprise, Evans is a big fan of “A Colt Is My Passport.” The director introduced the film at the 2023 L’Etrange Festival, which included a write-up about the movie. Evans will develop his remake via Amazon MGM‘s Orion Pictures, with casting currently underway.  However, it remains unclear when the project enters production; Evans typically takes some time in between projects, so maybe don’t expect this pic until 2027 at the earliest.

Still, a new Gareth Evans pic is good news for fans of his gritty, uber-violent style of action film. And a “A Colt Is My Passport” remake is a perfect match for Evans’ talents. Despite its derivative set-up, the original brims with stylistic flair, and Evans will no doubt bring his signature touch to his version.

Stay tuned for who will star in Evans’ “A Colt Is My Passport.” Any guesses there?
