Got a Tip?

Emmys 2021: ‘The Crown,’ ‘Queen’s Gambit’ & ‘Ted Lasso’ Win Big [Complete Winners List]

In CONCLUSION: OK, so that’s a wrap. As somewhat predicted, it became a big night between HBO and Netflix, with the streamer beating their rival cable channel/streamer in the end. Netflix took home the big Outstanding drama series prize (“The Crown“), and then all eyes were on the Outstanding Limited Series award. It was clearly between “Mare Of Easttown” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” and while Kate Winslet took the Best Limited Series Actress award, Scott Frank, the writer, director, and creator of “The Queen’s Gambit,” took the Best Director in a Limited Series award and thus that was the sign that ‘Gambit’ was just ever so gently ending them out. Winslet was a major favorite, but ‘Gambit’ was well-loved too, evidently just a bit more.

In the comedy realm, AppleTV+ took home their first major Emmy Award in Outstanding Comedy Series for “Ted Lasso.” The beloved series looked like it might sweep the entire comedy categories, but HBO Max and “Hacks” had something to say about that and won some major awards in the category as well including Outstanding Actress for Jean Smart.

EARLIER: While Netflix lost the title of most Emmy-nominated network, cable channel, or streamer last year to HBO/HBOMax (albeit a disputed claim), but they’re going to be gunning back for that title tonight. Yes, HBO/HBO Max has “Mare Of Easttown” and “Hacks,” (and double-nominee Jean Smart) both of which should be strong contenders in the evening, but Netflix has “The Queen’s Gambit” and “The Crown” that should give them both a run for their money. Over on the AppleTV+ side of things, “Ted Lasso” could be looking to shake up the entire comedy side of things and could arguably dominate the field now that “Schitt’s Creek” is over and no longer competition.
