French filmmaker Julia Ducournau returns to the Cannes Film Festival with “Alpha,” a new disaster film that is in competition today, as the project’s distributor NEON has sent over a teaser trailer that we can share.
“Alpha,” coming to theaters this October, focuses on a young girl played by Golshifteh Farahani, who is enduring events surrounding a global disaster as she returns home to her single mother, and the film explores what happens next once that new reality sinks in.
The rest of the cast consists of Tahar Rahim (“A Prophet”), Melissa Broros, Emma Mackey, Finnegan Oldfield, and Louai El Amrousy.
A brief logline for “Alpha” via NEON reads:
Alpha, a troubled 13-year-old, lives with her single mom. Their world collapses the day she returns from school with a tattoo on her arm.
Ducournau caught the attention of many after previous efforts such as “Raw” and the bonkers “Titane,” the latter winning the Palme d’Or 2021, making “Alpha” quite the anticipated follow-up from the director.
“Alpha is Julia’s most personal, profound work yet, and we are looking forward to a global audience discovering the story with as much excitement as we did,” FilmNation Entertainment and Charades said in a statement promoting the film. “We can’t wait to bring the film to market in Cannes and to launch sales together for the first time and collaborate in this way.”
