'Escape Plan 3' Trailer: Sylvester Stallone & Dave Bautista Are Back In A Straight-To-Video Franchise That You Forgot Existed

“This time, it’s personal.”

If you hear those words in a trailer for an action film sequel, you have to know what you are getting yourself into. It’s a cliche at this point, but making things “personal” is a quick way to effectively up the emotional stakes of an action film, and thus, the thought is the film will be better because of it. In the teaser for “Escape Plan: The Extractors,” things apparently get personal, but it’s clear that Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista aren’t going to be winning any Oscars for this film.

Believe it or not, ‘Extractors’ is the third film in the “Escape Plan” franchise. What the hell is the “Escape Plan” franchise, you may be wondering? Good question. You’ve likely forgotten the 2013 original film, starring Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was supposed to be an ‘Expendables’-esque action film seeing two legends of action cinema teaming up for another callback to a bygone era of ‘80s films where the size of the muscles was only matched by the size of the guns.

The original “Escape Plan” was a modest hit, and spawned a straight-to-DVD sequel, titled “Escape Plan 2: Hades.” And at this point, Bautista was brought on, fresh from his star-making turn in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” to replace Schwarzenegger opposite Stallone. That film apparently was popular enough to warrant a third film. Guess there were plenty of unanswered questions from the sequel? At this point, you have to wonder if the titular plan to escape is actually any good or if these characters need to find new career options.
