Ethan Hawke can be seen in a number of films over recent years. Everything from “First Reformed” to the recent “Stockholm.” And while he seemingly keeps busy with plenty of acting jobs, Hawke is much more calculated when it comes to his directorial gigs. However, after last year’s “Blaze,” the actor-turned-filmmaker is ready to step behind the camera again, adapting the play “Camino Real” for the big screen.
Deadline is reporting that Hawke is set to direct the adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ acclaimed play “Camino Real.” The film is co-written by Hawke and writer-composer Shelby Gaines, and is set to star Oscar winner Juliette Binoche. “Camino Real” tells the story of a group of people in a small, isolated desert town that, through a series of strange events, begin to come to terms with growing older.
As mentioned, Hawke has stepped behind the camera several times before. Most recently, in 2018, he released his musical biopic “Blaze,” which received some great reviews. He’s also directed films like “Chelsea Walls,” “The Hottest State,” and the documentary “Seymour: An Introduction.” The filmmaker has a close relationship with “Camino Real,” having starred in a version of the play that was put together in 1999.
Binoche is an acclaimed actress, who has most recently starred in Claire Denis’ “High Life” and Olivier Assayas’ “Non-Fiction.” She is probably best known for her Oscar-winning work in “The English Patient,” as well as earning a nomination for her role in “Chocolat.”
No word on a release date for “Camino Real,” but the report states that the film is scheduled to begin production in Brazil next year.
