When FX announced plans for a “Fargo” TV series, there were a lot of fans that were skeptical. Could creator Noah Hawley take a beloved film, from the Coen Brothers, and turn it into a television series that would be unique and not just a remake of the film? The answer is clear after three amazing seasons and multiple awards. Now, with Hawley working on other projects, most notably another FX series “Legion,” is there a chance for a season 4 of “Fargo?” According to Hawley, there is definitely going to be a fourth season and he also has an idea for it.
“I now have an idea that’s less in the corner of my eye and more in front of me,” says Hawley in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t have a lot of time right now to focus on it. What I can say is that it will be another period piece.”
While the first and third seasons of “Fargo” took place in modern times, the second season was set in the late-1970s. So, it looks like Hawley is hoping to go back in time for the upcoming fourth season. But it sounds like he wants to go a lot further back than the ‘70s. THR asked if he’s thinking decades ago, or does he want to go back to the 1700s or 1800s?
“I think it could, as long as there’s something unique to say about it,” says Hawley. “On some level, there’s a good joke in the idea that the more things change, the more they stay the same. I don’t know if there’s 10 episodes in that or not! But if you look at the history of the region and the waves of migration and people coming in, and the things people do for money … there’s something interesting to making a period version of it.”
Ultimately, he does have a direction he wants the next season to go in, but with his other projects, and the fact that FX hasn’t officially picked up “Fargo” for season 4, have prevented him from focusing his attention on it right now. However, he does know that whatever time period he sets season 4, it has to be true to the “Fargo” franchise.
“More and more as I think about telling stories in this vein and what the original film is about, these are really American stories and stories about the American landscape, and the things that people do for money,” he says. “I feel like I have a very interesting and exciting direction to go in. I’m trying to find the time to get it down on paper.”
Before the end of the interview, THR brings up another important piece of business, the impending Fox/Disney merger. FX, which is owned by Fox, has always been a hub of adult-oriented, award-winning series. The tone of these series doesn’t necessarily fit with the Disney model. According to Hawley, that doesn’t matter much, and he thinks everything will be just fine, in the long run.
“I obviously have had a lot of conversations with [FX president] John Landgraf and everyone over there,” he says. “FX is such a distinct and unique brand. I can’t imagine that Disney would be interested in eradicating it or watering it down and turning it into something it’s not. The FX brand has a real value to it. I don’t get the sense, nor have I had any conversations that lead me to believe this, that anything is going to change very much.”
