New 'The Favourite' Trailer: Yorgos Lanthimos' Latest Looks Like An Absurdist 'Dangerous Liaisons'

Though some might feel it appropriate to deem this time of year “fall festival season,” you might also consider calling the new cycle of film we’re entering into something different. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Yorgos season.

A new trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” has arrived, filled to the brim with enough Masterpiece Theater-with-a-hayfever slapdash Lanthimos wonder to entertain 50 queen’s courts.

The film made its Venice bow last week, where the director’s biggest effort yet will begin to position itself into the Oscar race. Olivia Colman’s seemingly-madcap take on Queen Anne should have no trouble courting a good level of buzz, as could Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, no strangers to the awards conversations. It’s also one that should be a firm contender in the crafts category, with a specific eye on the lensing and production design (and, duh, costumes).

Though, aside from the derby, how refreshing will it be to get a period piece that looks as devoid of stuffing as the Griswold family turkey. These films have a nasty habit of an overload of decorum and chamber charades, but for the guy who’s masterminded recent films like “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” traditional oligarchy melodrama is probably not going to be on the menu.

Expect something weird, irreverent and unique for the genre, as well as a handful of scenes that will etch themselves into your cranium as something you can safely say you’ve never seen in a movie about kings and queens.

So, if you thought “Amadeus” was out there, wait until you get a load of “The Favourite.” It’s sure to be one of the fall’s most electrifying offerings and will probably have enough appealing factors for everyone across the Oscar spectrum to be a major player come trophy time.

It’s likely to pop up throughout festivals this fall before its November 23 bow. It’s for sure coming to the New York Film Festival for those up in the Big Apple.

The film also will bring along Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn and Mark Gatiss for its jaunt. Here’s the trailer:
