It’s been nearly eight years (2016’s “American Honey”) since we last saw a narrative feature from director Andrea Arnold. Since then, things haven’t been really easy for the filmmaker. Sure, she released an acclaimed documentary, “Cow,” back in 2021, but people probably remember the issues she experienced while working on Season 2 of “Big Little Lies.” There was reported behind-the-scenes drama that resulted in a he-said/she-said between Arnold and HBO. Needless to say, it’s good to hear Arnold is back in the world of narrative features with the forthcoming “Featherwood,” and that she has found one of the biggest stars on the planet to star.

According to Deadline, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the upcoming true-crime drama, “Featherwood,” directed by none other than Andrea Arnold. The film is based on the true story of Carol Blevins, a heroin addict and a “Aryan Princess featherwood.” Basically, for years, she served as an FBI informant working inside the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, a notorious neo-Nazi gang. Through her work, she fed information to the feds which helped save lives and put people behind bars. Interestingly, the script is written by Ned Benson, who previously worked with Johansson on the Marvel Studios film, “Black Widow.”
Since her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to an end a few years ago, Johansson has kept things fairly quiet. Sure, she had a sizable role in Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” but she has mostly been attached to relatively small dramas. That said, she does have a massive film coming next, “Project Artemis,” where she stars opposite Channing Tatum.
Arnold, as discussed above, has gone back and forth between TV and film work over the course of her career. She is probably best known for films such as “Fish Tank,” “Wuthering Heights,” and the aforementioned “American Honey.” On TV, she directed episodes of “I Love Dick” and “Transparent.”
It’s unclear when work will begin on “Featherwood.” The film is being sold at this year’s EFM and should be one of the bigger projects on sale during the market. You would imagine a studio would rush to work on this one.
