Every year, there are more than a few films that seemingly fly under the radar for most film fans but actually deserve a much larger audience. Last year, one of those films is “Never Goin’ Back,” a stoner, buddy comedy led by two strong female performances and the clever, funny eye of director Augustine Frizzell. Since then, the director has done some TV work, but we’ve been dying to know what would be her feature film follow-up. And now, we know that she’ll helm “Last Letter from Your Lover,” and once again, she’s found some great female leads to carry the story.
According to Deadline, Frizzell has brought on Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones and Golden Globe-nominated actress Shailene Woodley to lead the cast for the upcoming romantic drama, “Last Letter from Your Lover.” The film, based on the novel by Jojo Moyes, tells a dual-narrative story focusing on a modern-day journalist (Jones) that comes across some love letters from the ‘60s, featuring the emotional journey of another woman (Woodley). The journalist then takes inspiration from the letters to research the identities of the people from decades previous and find out how their love affair truly ends.
Jones is probably best known for her work in the films “The Theory of Everything,” “On the Basis of Sex,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and the upcoming “The Aeronauts.” Woodley has starred in plenty of feature films, most notably the “Divergent” franchise, but is also known for her small-screen work on series such as “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” and the recent “Big Little Lies.”

Joining the two actresses in the cast are Callum Turner, Nabhaan Rizwan, Joe Alwyn, and Ncuti Gatwa.
As mentioned, the film is directed by Frizzell, who made her feature debut with the film “Never Goin’ Back.” However, since then, she’s directed episodes of “Sweetbitter” and the HBO hit teen drama “Euphoria.” She’s also the director of the pilot for the upcoming Amazon series “Half-Empty.”
No word yet on when we might see “Last Letter from Your Lover” hit theaters, but so far, all signs point to this being a film we’ll want to keep an eye out for.
